Credit Cards are a Must Have Payment Acceptance Method

Credit cards have always been a great payment acceptance method. With credit card companies competing with each other on rates and credit types, there are thousands on new credit card holders every day.

As a business, you want to be able to make the checkout process convenient for your customer. Some of your customers pay in cash, some with checks, some with money orders, etc. You might already accept credit cards through Paypal but did you know that there are many people who simply refuse to use Paypal?

The other way to accept credit card payments is to sign up with a credit card merchant. They may have an online gateway available for checkout, but they also have credit card processor machines. Those are the machines you swipe your card through when you go to the store.

No matter how you accept payment it is important to explore all your options and maximize your payment acceptance abilities. Your company will certainly profit from it.

Without credit cards, businesses would lose billions every year. Due to customers who make impulse buys, and holiday shopping, credit cards bring in alot of money. Credit cards are currently the most widely used payment method used today. Visa, & Mastercard are the most common of the bunch. Then there are others such as American Express, Discover Card, and Diners Club Card. The latter being harder to get because of the credit requirements. Then you have the secured credit cards for those trying to establish credit because of previous chargeoffs, and collections.

Accepting all credit card types is advised.

Merchant Account Rates Explained: Do You Know How Much Each Credit Card Transaction Really Costs?

THE TWO COMPONENTS OF A CREDIT/DEBIT CARD TRANSACTION

Each time a merchant process a credit or debit card transaction, she is charged an inquiry fee and a percentage of the total transaction. The inquiry fee is a flat amount, typically between 20 cents and 35 cents. The percentage charged, is typically called your “credit card rate” and it is variable based on the type of transaction and the type of card used.

CREDIT CARD RATE CATEGORIES

Credit Card Rates are typically broken into two categories:

Card Present (where the card is physically swiped through a credit card terminal)–The lowest rates are typically applied to card-present transactions.

Card Not Present (any type of transaction where the card cannot be swiped)–This type of transaction is also referred to as MOTO (mail order/telephone order). All transactions where a credit card is not physically swiped through a terminal, including internet transactions, phone transactions, or credit-card numbers keyed into a terminal, fall into this category.

CREDIT CARD RATE TYPES

The rate for each credit card transaction type is determined by both the kind of card used, the way it is processed, and the time it takes the merchant to batch the transactions for processing. It is important to know whether you do mostly card present or card not present transaction when selecting a plan type, because card not present charges are significantly higher in a Type 1 plan than in a Type 4 plan.

Type 1 (or Retail)–This type of account is designed for card-present transactions.

Type 1 Qualified–The card is swiped through a terminal, and the merchant batches the transactions within 24 hours. Most swiped credit cards will fall into this category. It is typically the lowest rate.

Type 1 Mid-Qual–This rate applies to rewards cards and key-entered transactions. It also applies to charges batched in 24-48 hours, that would be Qualified had they been batched sooner.

Type 1 Non-Qualified–All corporate and government cards are charged this rate regardless of batch processing time. Other transactions batched after 48 hours are also charged this rate. This is typically the highest rate charged.

Type 4 (or MOTO)–This type of account is designed for card-not-present transactions.

Type 4 Qualified–Most transactions fall into this category, provided the merchant batches transaction within 24 hours. This is the lowest Type 4 rate.

Type 4 Non-Qualified–All corporate, government, and reward cards are charged this rate regardless of batch processing time. It also applies to charged batched after 24 hours that would otherwise be Qualified had they been batched sooner.

DEBIT CARD RATES

Debit cards are classified the exact same way credit cards are, but the rate for a debit card transaction of the same category and type is typically lower than the rate for a credit card.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

1. If you have an account that gives you good rates for card-present transactions it will typically penalize you heavily for card-not present transactions. However, you can get a Merchant Account that is designed for these Card Not Present transactions that will provide you with substantially lower rates. Thus, before selecting an account you need to understand the type of transactions you use most. Also note that it is very important to immediately destroy credit card information provided in writing or over the phone and to store electronically submitted information (such as that submitted over the Internet) on a secure server.

Tip: If you regularly have both types of transactions, create two accounts. One Type 1 account and one Type 4 account.

2. Make sure your credit card processor is giving you separate lower rates for Debit Card transactions. They can afford to charge you less for these transactions, because their risk of non-payment is substantially lower. Approximately half of the transactions nationally are actually debit cards transactions, so if you’re not getting the benefit of a lower rate, you are paying too much.

Tip: Very low Type 1 Qualified Debit Card rates are often advertised as teasers to get people to switch Merchant Accounts. Know what percentage of your transactions fall into this category before making a switch.

Merchants: Make sure you know what you are really paying!

Need of Credit Card Processing

Most people now are turning to plastic money over paper, when they open their wallets. In 1998, credit card and debit card spending exceeded trillion globally, making it a necessary payment option for majority businesses. Despite being so popular, many small businesses are reluctant to go for credit card processing. In reality, credit card processing involves a healthy coordination between multiple high-speed computer networks.

Credit card processing services can be hired from people providing merchant services. However, the world of merchant services can be confusing, especially for small businesses. Since the advent of the Internet, people prefer to buy goods and products online, which have made online shopping a popular form of shopping today. If you are into same league and offering online shopping facility, the best step will be to go for online credit card processing. This will not just boost your sales but also give your business a new dimension.

There are various online credit card processing companies. Advanced Merchant Services or AMS provides all features and services under one roof. Majority of customers going for online purchase prefer to have an easy and secure online transaction, so that their private and vital information is not leaked into wrong hands. Most consumers look for fast, secure, and prompt service and that too in real time format. All these services can be achieved via credit card processing feature on e-commerce websites. If you are into e-commerce business, or just offer one item or service on the website, the wisest step can be to go for online credit card processing.

An internet merchant account or credit card processing will not just boost your online sales, but also be able to handle various types of cost. For having credit card processing facility or getting a merchant account it usually requires a one-time setup fee between to 0. Some merchant account providers even waive the setup fee in promotion period or in conjunction with other services. Some of the other costs that come in are gateway fee, statement fee, annual fee, transaction fees, and discount rate fees.

AMS provides the highest level of merchant account services. Following a transparent way of business, AMS makes sure that its consumers are never at loss.

Should you Let your Stock Photo Business Customers Pay by Credit Card?

To accept credit card payments you need to set up a “Merchant Account.” This is a credit card processing account that you establish, that makes it possible for you (your photography business) to accept all major credit cards for payment. This account is not the same as your checking account or savings account, but it allows you to accept credit card payments from your customers, and for the money to get deposited into your existing bank account.

TWO TYPES

There are two types of accounts a merchant can use. Unless you are a brick-and-mortar studio or stock photo agency, you probably won’t be interested in the first type, which is the over-the-counter type of account, where the credit card is physically swiped through a machine at the time of purchase.

The account that likely would fit you best is the Mail-Order/Telephone Order merchant account. Your client, photobuyer or print order customer, enters their credit card information onto a form on a website, or by email, or by phone. You then process the merchant account transaction, which goes to a verification provider. Once the card is verified and approved (done electronically), your client’s payment is deposited into your bank account.

Can you afford to accept credit card payments? Some banks may charge you an annual fee in addition to a ‘per transaction fee’ — but there are many other providers that charge only a small percentage of the sale amount at each transaction, when you process a credit card (you pay an average of 2-3% per transaction to such a merchant account provider). These merchant account providers are ideal for small business owners and online businesses that may need to process only a handful of sales each week.

There are several credit card processing providers to choose from, each offering different features and fees. Figuring which one of these would work best for you, to process your customer’s credit card payments, can be a daunting task.

A local bank, because they are not familiar with the stock photo industry, may deny your business application for a merchant account because they don’t want to take the risk. Most small businesses end up going through third party providers who are willing to take the risk, and actually get the merchant account on your behalf; then apply their own rate structure to your transactions.

To move ahead with your merchant account, you’ll need a shopping cart program of some kind, which must work with the system you use to process credit cards online. Unfortunately, if you go with a third party shopping cart rather than a custom written one, it may not work with all credit card processing gateways. Be sure that whatever shopping cart program you use on your website, works with the merchant account you ultimately end up using to process customer payments.

What’s the charge to get involved? You pay fees to the third party merchant account provider (or the bank if you are able to secure your own account directly with a bank that provides it) in exchange for the ability to accept credit card payments. The fees and rates you pay will vary depending on many factors, including how long you’ve been in business, the type of business you operate, your credit score, how much of your sales are processed by phone versus online, and the amount of credit card sales you process each month.

As mentioned, some providers charge an annual fee in addition to a fee per transaction, while other providers charge only a percentage of each transaction processed. Typical rates for small businesses accepting phone and mail order payments are .10 to .30 per transaction, plus 2 to 3% of the transaction amount. If the merchant account provider you are considering wants to charge more than this percentage, be sure to check out a few others to see if you can get a lower rate. Sometimes, your credit rating will result in your having to pay higher fees — but it’s worth shopping around a little to see if you can get a lower percentage rate per transaction.

When you’re shopping companies, looking for the best merchant account provider, make sure to compare all of the fees to see how much you’re going to end up spending per each sale. You should also take into consideration what the application fee is (if any), how much you pay annually, how much you must spend on equipment needed to set up your account (in case you need a swiping machine), and whether or not you must maintain a monthly minimum of sales volume.

YOUR LOCAL BANK

If you sign up for a merchant account with your local bank, you’ll be able to make direct deposits into your business account at the bank. If you outsource, study the terms for cancellation and under what conditions the provider can cancel your account, as well. Compare how each merchant account provider allows you to withdraw your money — can you do it whenever you want or do you have to do it at specific times of the month or year? How long will it take to receive your funds once you’ve requested a withdrawal or transfer of the money? How does the provider handle charge-backs? Read all of the forms and contracts associated with the merchant account before you sign anything.

The process for applying for a merchant account varies depending on the company. For example, some providers ask you to provide a photo of your driver’s license, and even of your home office or studio to verify you are in the location you say that you are. Some companies will want to send a representative to photograph your place of business. Occasionally, you’ll be asked to provide a DBA (“Doing Business As”) or business license, your tax returns, and profit and loss statements.

In our own case, here at PhotoSource International, about five years ago we did our homework and contacted a half a dozen providers. We determined that Total Merchant Services would be best for us. They have been consistent and quick, and I can highly recommend them. If you’re interested in checking them out:

Applying Online for a Merchant Account

Who should apply for a credit card merchant account online? Why, you should, of course, if you want to grow your business and maximize sales volume! In this day and age, more and more business functions are moving into cyberspace, which means that business owners must be ready to travel to this relatively unknown domain if they want to maintain strong customer ties and stay a step or two ahead of the competition. Don’t worry if you’re not Web savvy; most online processes that are geared to the general consumer are not hard to perform. In fact, most are downright easy.

First, find a lender that you respect that is willing to extend you a credit card merchant account online. This may be the bank where your business interests and accounts currently reside. Or you may choose to shop for another lender with better rates or services. Don’t rush into this decision, however. Plan some time in your schedule to carefully browse the many services offered through a host of financial institutions today. You can browse the Internet by typing in search phrases like “merchant account” or “merchant services” and seeing what Google or your favorite search engine can bring up. Then it becomes a matter of checking out each lender to find the one that will best fit with your business budget or growth objectives. Some companies may seem a little too shady, while others may not have been in business long enough to enjoy a solid reputation. Others may charge a frightful amount for the services you want. Ask around your local business community to see which merchant account providers others are using, and then compare those costs and services with those you find online. You can probably reduce your list to a few of the better underwriters in short order. Then you will need to make the final selection by comparing monthly and annual fees.

Applying for a credit card merchant account online is fast and easy. Just click on the lender’s home page link to “application” (or some variation thereof) and follow the links to the application page. Then type the requested information in each blank. Contact the customer service representative if you do not understand a question or if you are unsure how to answer it. Remember to print a copy of the application if you are able to do so, or keep a copy of the confirmation number if one is provided. Often a company will email a verification of your application’s receipt and tell you when to expect a reply. At least print this page, if nothing else, for your records.

After applying for a credit card merchant account online, sit back and wait to hear about the decision. Often this arrives within a few days or even hours by email, although some are mailed out by post. When you receive approval and open your merchant account, you can begin to accept credit card payments right away. You will be delighted to see how quickly your profits increase as customers begin taking advantage of this valuable service. Don’t wait-consider applying today for your credit card merchant account online.

How to Accept Credit Cards over the Internet

When you opened your new business, you thought that everything would be fairly straight forward. After all, businesses every day complete credit card processing, online credit card approval, and internet business. But finding the right way to set up these services for your particular business can be complex and time consuming.

How To Set Up Credit Card Processing

If you want to accept credit card online, you’ll need to set up a credit card merchant account with a reputable firm. There are countless resources available to the new business owner for just this occasion. A wide variety of them can be found online. Search for either credit card processing or credit card merchant account online and begin to visit some of the sites listed in the search results.

Each company will offer its own version of a merchant account. You will sign a contract and pay a regular fee to use the services provided. They company should provide you with all the equipment and software necessary to successfully accept credit card online.

The Options

If you are looking to set up an online account so that you may accept credit card online, you will want to establish a relationship with a reputable company that has been doing business with internet companies for a number of years. Read the testimonials and make sure that the website covers all of your questions and concerns.

Some companies will charge you set up fees or programming fees. Compare each credit card merchant account side by side to see which one charges fees for which services. If fees are waived down the line, it may because the set up fee is so high. If set up is free, you may find hidden fees that will be charged to your merchant account at a later date. Set up a comparison chart for yourself with the major features and what each company offers.

What You Need

Obviously, if you want to accept credit card online, you’ll need to have a website or at least a presence on an existing site.

Most credit card merchant account will require that you pass a credit check. Be sure that you can meet the qualifications of the company you choose. Decide on a back up company or two if you have bad credit or a history of late payments. If you are turned down by your first choice, you can apply to the second or third company on your list.

You will also need an online shopping cart for your customers to use during their visit to your website. The shopping cart stores the items they wish to purchase until they are ready to complete the transaction. With credit card processing, the shopping cart totals all merchandise, plus tax and shipping charges. The merchant service you choose should provide you with an online shopping cart.

Overall, remember to check the reputation of the company you choose and don’t settle for a credit card merchant account that doesn’t meet all your expectations. If one company doesn’t offer what you’re looking for, keep looking.

Why You Need an Online Merchant Account

An online credit card merchant account can help your business in ways you might not have imagined. While it may seem as though only high-ranking company executives or big-name corporations might be interested in a merchant account, there are many reasons why a small-scale entrepreneur or even a home business owner might want to learn more about this unique marketing and credit card payment tool.

One reason to consider an online credit card merchant account is because you can apply directly through your company’s bank, if you have been doing business with a local financial institution. Chances are the bank can offer a merchant account to business owners like you, but it is important to check the terms and fees, since you may be able to get a better deal elsewhere. Banks don’t always have the lowest prices on accounts like this. You can browse the Internet or ask around the business community to find out who has the lowest merchant services account fees. The costs may include any combination of the following: application fee, setup fee, gateway, maintenance and service, annual membership, and others. However, some account underwriters can waive some or all of these fees for the right customer. Find out if your company is eligible for these waivers or some type of discount before you apply.

Another reason to think about applying for an online credit card merchant account is to upgrade your professional status and enhance the way you do business. You don’t have to operate in the mom-and-pop stage of development forever. Instead, you can get the merchant account and start processing business dealings faster and more efficiently than ever. Your customers will admire and appreciate your efforts to make things work better for them, and your employees will appreciate the time saving steps that can be implemented with a merchant account.

When approved, your online credit card merchant account will help you create a Website to represent your business on the World Wide Web. Some underwriters provide free software and setup while others charge for these services. Be sure that your site offers an up-to-date image with plentiful information to catch the browser’s eye and keep customers interested long enough to make a sale. When they do decide to purchase something, your merchant account setup will let them pay right away with a credit card instead of waiting for a check to be posted. The money will be funneled by the underwriter through a gateway for deposit in your checking account.

With an online credit card merchant account, your Website can soon become fully functional, alleviating much of the sales and cashier work that your company may presently be handling. Your time will be freed to deal with other aspects of the business, perhaps the more creative venues. In the meantime the Website will be automated enough to process payments without the help of customer service, except for the occasional question or problem, so keep someone available at least part-time for this purpose.

Don’t wait for your competitors to jump at the chance to get ahead of you. Find out now how you can apply for an affordable online credit card merchant account.

Looking for the best credit card merchant account? Admittedly, there are a plethora of lenders to choose from when you browse the Internet for merchant account services. But what are you really looking for? Do you want an enhanced business image? Increased public exposure? A larger client base? Additional sales and revenues? Then you’re on the right track! A merchant account can do all this and more when you work with the right company.

Finding a quality lender to work with for the best credit card merchant account is not as difficult as you might think. You can start by asking your local banker for information about its merchant accounts. If you don’t feel the terms are quite right for your company, ask for a referral or check out other local banks yourself. You also might want to try credit unions or reputable lenders to see if you can partner with a financial underwriter in your community. That way you will get to know the company representative and perhaps meet occasionally face to face, which is always a desirable goal in business when feasible. But if not, there are plenty of good lenders to work with.

The best credit card merchant account providers tend to compete with each other to get business owners’ business. In fact, some will offer to meet or beat a competing underwriter’s price. So if you like the terms but not the price at a particular bank, find a lower rate somewhere else and tell the first bank about it. Perhaps you can get your preferred terms and lower costs at the bank of your choice. But if it doesn’t work out for some reason, keep looking for other lenders and shop for the deal that will best suit your company’s growth plan. It’s just a matter of matching your needs with the lender’s capabilities to make a match that satisfies both of you.

What would the best credit card merchant account do for your business? You can start accepting credit card payments immediately when you get approved for a merchant account. Start by installing a simple credit card processor, the kind that swipes a credit card, at your place of business. Then you may want to consider digital telephone credit processing services. Or you might opt to go wireless if you travel to remote destinations to collect payments. You can even put up a company Website as your crowning achievement and accept credit card payments there as well. In a very short time your client base could multiply, along with your profits, all because of your merchant account status. Are your competitors already using technology like this to accept credit card payments? Then you have no time to lose!

Start shopping now for a lender that will approve your application, offer low-fee services, and provide reliable support while you upgrade your company’s business image. Don’t stop with the first company to offer you a merchant account. You deserve the best so don’t settle for less when you apply for your bank merchant account.

Finding a Merchant Account Provider

Who doesn’t want a credit card merchant account! This special service allows you to process credit card payments from your clients in a number of ways that can help to speedily grow your business. A merchant account has been known to double or triple business profits in a relatively short amount of time, so only if your company is poised for growth should you consider this exciting opportunity.

If you currently work with a bank that you trust with your business concerns, ask about the possibility of applying for a credit card merchant account. Most companies are eager to welcome this type of business from customers they know and trust. As long as you have established a solid business credit history, pay your bills in a timely manner, and aren’t involved in questionable or unethical pursuits, your chances of being approved for a merchant account are good. Of course, your bank may not offer this type of account, or you may be able to find better terms with another lender, so don’t feel as though you must apply for merchant services with your current lender. Instead, ask around at trade shows, conventions, or civic business meetings to see what type of merchant account providers your competitors are using. They can probably offer helpful tips on which lenders to court and which ones to avoid. You also can check with local business listings for references on general lenders, some of which may offer merchant accounts. Or you can browse the Internet to bring up a list of links that will let you contact those that seem most compatible with your business interests.

Getting a credit card merchant account is pretty easy. After locating potential lenders to work with, you should compare services and fees to make sure they will work with the business plan that you are using or one that you plan to set up. Check your company’s budget to find out how much you can afford to invest in credit card processing equipment and service options. Then compare your budget with transactional fees, maintenance expenses, and application or gateway rates to find a lender that is affordable for your needs.

When you have been approved for a credit card merchant account, you can start to accept credit card payments from your clients immediately, often with a couple of days. All you need to do is select the type of processing equipment that best fits with your customers’ purchasing patterns. For example, if most visit your store to shop, an onsite credit card processor that you can purchase for a few hundred dollars is the simplest and perhaps most effective way to start. But if you deliver goods and services, a wireless unit might be the better choice. Of course, if you do both, two units might be affordable, but you will need to check your budget. You can always start with one and add another later.

Start looking for a possible merchant card services provider to get approved for your credit card merchant account!
